In Jan. I received a letter from a collection agency stating I owed 1,500 to the gas company.

Question:
In Jan. I received a letter from a collection agency stating I owed 1,500 to the gas company. I knew it was in error, so I called the gas company. It turns out, my SS# is 111-11-1112, but the person who owed the money, their SS# was 111-11-1121, so I guess someone told the collection agency the wrong # or they wrote down the wrong number. So I called the agency, after a week the guy told me that it was an error and that he had removed me from their system. I asked for a letter stating that there was a mistake, but he said it was not needed since I was removed from the computers.
I just pulled my credit reports from 2 places, equifax and the other e place. Both reports were clean, no collections, etc.

Does this mean Im clear? Or could this still show up months/years later?

Answer:
Call your state's public utilities commission to find out how to file a complaint. Also, for your sake, I hope you did not really disclose your SSN in your message. If that's really your SSN, you might have much more problems to worry about than a single errant entry on your credit report. Can you say "identity theft?"
