Question:
When I moved in April of 2005 I canceled a VOIP phone I had with AT&T. I was
told the account was closed (verbally, so no proof). Mail was forwarded to
my new adress.
2 months ago (may 2007) I check my credit report and see a $45 "Charge Off"
by AT&T dated 12/2006. I disputed it but it comes back "Verified".
So today I called AT&T who claims they sent me bills. Funny that the post
office managed to loose those particular bills while everything else was
forwarded just fine.
AT&T also told me they have no interest in talking to me as the debt has
been sold to a collection agency.
I got the number for the collection agency and AT&T wanted me to "have a
great day". Not bloody likely.
I haven't called the collection agency yet.
So what are my options? Of course I want this stupid thing OFF my credit
report. But from what I gether online, odds are the collection agency will
refuse and just mark it "Charge-off settled" which is just as bad as a
regular charge off.
Or should I just ignore it and wait for it to drop off in 6 years?
Answer:
-Send letters to the FTC, with CCs to the company and the collection company.
Tell the collection co you dispute it and they can either 1) take it off
your report or 2) give it back to ATT&T.
If those fail, sue 'em baby!! Small claims court. Ask for damages and a
court order telling them to remove it from your credit report.

A: Maybe you did not disput it correctly.
Have them show proof of your signature on an agreement that you signed to
have that service. =
