Question:
I just received a letter from Columbia House Video Club that they are
going to refer my account to professional collection agency.
Are they really going to do that or they are trying to threaten me, so I
will pay for my membership which is according to them $100?
Did somebody have a similar experience with them?
Did they really use a collection agency?
Answer:
You haven't provided much information as regards your contract with Columbia
House. If you do owe them the 100 bucks then I don't see why they wouldn't
refer the matter to collections. It is certainly less costly than going to
court. As regards collection agencies, there is not much to fear there...
except a weekly message on your answering machine asking you why you didn't
pay your bill.
If you believe that you do not owe them the $ 100, don't bother contacting
their customer service line. Call the corporate head office and ask who is
in charge of their in-house counsel. Send him/her a registered letter,
explaining the fact that you do not owe them any money and that furthermore,
you will be taking them to small claims court in order to seek a judgment
for resiliation of the contract, plus any damages that might accrue from the
matter appearing on your credit file.
